1,730. An Engraved Get

Hilchos Geirushin 4:6

Let’s say that a get was engraved on a board, a stone or a metal plate. If the scribe engraved the shapes of the letters, then the get is valid as it’s just another form of writing as seen from Jeremiah 17:1, which refers to things that were “written with a pen of iron.” Similarly, a get is valid if the letters were debossed on the back of the plate so that they projected from the front. However, if the scribe carved out the insides of the letters so that they protrude on both sides of the plate like the writing on gold coins, then the get is invalid because this is not considered writing.

Hilchos Geirushin 4:7

A get is also valid if one carves or sketches the shapes of the letters on a hide. A get may be written using any alphabet and in any language. A get that is written with the alphabet of one language and whose witnesses sign using the alphabet of a different language is valid so long as the witnesses understand the language and the alphabet in the get.
