#281: The Three Conditions to Permit Borer
1. Although separating “food” (ochel) from “waste” (pesolet) constitutes borer, Chazal permit performing the act of selection from a mixture when three conditions are all fulfilled which render it more similar to an act of eating and less similar to the melachah performed when making bread.
2. The three conditions necessary to permit borer are:
a. Selecting the “food,” or portion that one desires, from the “waste,” or portion that one does not want, and not vice-versa (ochel mitoch pesolet)
b. Selecting with one’s hands and not with a vessel (biyad)
c. Selecting for immediate use and not for storage at a later time (miyad)
In the next few postings, we will discuss the details of each of the conditions and offer examples for each.
