#273: Whipped Cream

1. Using whipped cream in a can on Shabbat raises issues of “molid” (actively causing a transformation of form), since by spraying the whipped cream from the can, one actively transforms the liquid inside the can to a more foam-like solid consistency. Many poskim forbid hand-whipping cream for this and other reasons (Shemirat Shabbat K'hilchatah 11:31).

2. Some forbid using canned whipped cream on Shabbat as well due to “molid” (R. Yisroel Belsky). Others are lenient because the foam-like consistency is not treated as enough of a significant change to qualify as “molid.” In addition, when the whipped cream is left out for a while, it often reverts back to its original form (R. Hershel Schachter; R. Mordechai Willig; see https://oukosher.org/halacha-yomis/is-it-permissible-to-spray-whipped-cream-from-a-can-on-shabbos/ and https://www.eretzhemdah.org/newsletterArticle.asp?lang=en&pageid=48&cat=7&newsletter=996&article=3786. We will discuss other aspects of nolad in more detail within the halachot of cooking on Shabbat.
