#270: When Making Ice is Hachana
1. One may not perform an action on Shabbat in preparation for after Shabbat due to the rabbinic prohibition of hachanah. This prohibition applies even if no other Shabbat prohibition is violated. For example, one may not make a bed on Shabbat for use only after Shabbat (Shulchan Aruch, O.C. 302:6; Mishnah Berurah 302:19). We will discuss the issue of hachanah in more detail at a later date.
2. In light of the prohibition of hachanah, all the opinions we learned concerning making ice on Shabbat would agree that if the ice will definitely not be used on Shabbat, it is forbidden to prepare it, as this would qualify as an act of preparation unnecessary for Shabbat. Nevertheless, one who did so may still use the ice after Shabbat. If there is a chance that the ice may be needed on Shabbat, the lenient opinion would allow making ice, and the stringent opinion would also likely permit it in a case of need.
