2,286. Swarming Creatures
Maachalos Assuros 2:7
The eight swarming creatures mentioned in the Torah are weasels, mice, ferrets, hedgehogs, chameleons, lizards, snails and moles. One who eats a lentil-sized piece of their meat is liable for lashes. The volume that one is punished for eating is the same volume that transmits ritual impurity. The different creatures combine to make up the volume of a lentil.
Maachalos Assuros 2:8
The previous halacha only applies when one eats from these species after they have died. If one severs a limb from a living animal of one of these species and eats it, he only receive lashes for eating an olive-sized portion. These creatures all combine to make up the volume of an olive. If someone eats a whole limb of a swarming animal after it dies, he only receives lashes if it contains a lentil-sized portion.
