2,287. The Blood of Swarming Creatures
Maachalos Assuros 2:9
The blood and the flesh of these eight swarming creatures combine to make up the volume of a lentil so long as the blood is still attached to the flesh. Similarly, the blood of a snake combines with its flesh to make up the volume of an olive for which one receives lashes. The idea is that flesh isn’t separate from its blood, even though it doesn’t convey ritual impurity. The same is true of other swarming creatures that don’t convey impurity.
Maachalos Assuros 2:10
If someone collects the separated blood of swarming creatures and eats it, he is lashed for eating a portion the volume of an olive, so long as he received a warning not to eat it because of the laws of swarming creatures. If he was warned not to eat it because of the prohibition against eating blood, he is not liable to lashes. This is because one is only liable for eating the blood of domesticated or wild animals, and birds.
