2,224. How a Chalalah Is Made

Hilchos Issurei Biah 19:3

Pursuant to the previous halacha, if a kohein who is nine years and a day old is intimate with a divorcee or a zonah, or if a Kohein Gadol is intimate with one of these women or with a widow, or if a Kohein Gadol marries a non-virgin and is intimate with her, the woman is rendered a chalalah permanently. If she conceives from relations with a kohein, whether it’s the kohein who rendered her a chalalah or a different kohein, the children are chalalim. However, if a kohein betroths a woman who is prohibited to kohanim and she’s widowed or divorced from the betrothal, she is not rendered a chalalah. If she marries a kohein and is not intimate with him, she is rendered a chalalah. This is so even if she’s found to be a virgin.

Hilchos Issurei Biah 19:4

If a Kohein Gadol marries a woman over the age of majority or one who broke her hymen in a manner other than sexual intimacy, she is not rendered a chalalah. Similarly, if he is intimate with a non-virgin outside of marriage, she is not rendered a chalalah.
