1,864. When the Deceased Had Many Wives
Yibum v’Chalitzah 1:8
Fraternity doesn’t apply to converts and freed slaves so they are not halachically related, even to brothers in the same category. If one brother was conceived before his parents converted and born after, while the other was both conceived and born after they converted, these two are not brothers in halacha. Even twins who were born after their parents converted are not halachically brothers unless they were conceived after their parents converted.
Yibum v’Chalitzah 1:9
If the deceased had many wives, performing yibum or chalitzah with any one of them will absolve all the others of their obligation. One may not marry two of the widows as per 25:9, “did not build his brother’s house.” From this we understand that he is to build one house, not two. Similarly, if the deceased had many brothers, any one of them can perform chalitzah or yibum with one of the widows, which absolves all the others of their obligation.
