382. All This Sounds Very Familiar…: The prohibition against leaving the Pesach sheini overnight
They shall not leave over from it until morning… (Numbers 9:12)
Continuing the laws of the Pesach sheini, the second Passover offering, like the first, must not be left over until the next day. The reason is the same as in Mitzvah #8: it is not the nature of royalty to put aside leftovers. Since we are supposed to emulate royalty on Passover, we are not to stockpile the korban Pesach – or, in this case, the Pesach sheini – for future use.
This mitzvah applies only to men at a time when the Temple service is in effect. In the Talmud, it is discussed in the ninth chapter of tractate Pesachim. This mitzvah is codified in the Mishneh Torah in the fifth and sixth chapters of Hilchos Korban Pesach and is #119 of the 365 negative mitzvos in the Rambam’s Sefer HaMitzvos.
