Seforno: Kayin brings a korban of his own initiative; Hevel only brought one after Kayin. Kayin defined himself based on what he acquired but also took initiative. Initiative is very important but too much initiative is not good either.

Kli Yakar: Kayin and Hevel debate whether there is an Olam Habah (i.e. is it possible to return to Gan Eden); essentially a machloket about whether the concept of repentance exists. Kayin does not (which is why God has to tell him he can repent). Kayin ties himself to the land; Hevel focuses on movable acquisitions.
