434. Writing More Books, or Fewer
Tefillin, Mezuzah v’Sefer Torah 7:14
It is permitted to write scrolls containing single books from the five books of the Torah. Such scrolls do not have the sanctity of a sefer Torah. One may not write a scroll containing several sections of the Torah, nor may one write a scroll for a child to study from, but if he intends to complete a book of the Torah, then it is permitted. Writing a scroll three words in a line at a time is permitted.
Tefillin, Mezuzah v’Sefer Torah 7:15
One may write all the books of Tanach (Torah, Prophets, and Writings) in a single scroll. Four lines must be left between the books of the Torah, and three lines between the books of the Prophets. Three lines should also be left in between the books of Trei Asar (the Twelve “minor” prophets) so that if one decides to cut in between these books, he will be able to do so. The order of the Prophets is Joshua, Judges, Samuel, Kings, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, Isaiah, the Twelve. This order of the Writings is Ruth, Psalms, Job, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, the Song of Songs, Lamentations, Daniel, Esther, Ezra, Chronicles.
