63. When There Is No Doctor

Deios 4:21

All the good habits that the Rambam outlined only apply to a healthy person. A sick person, one who has a particular organ that is unwell, and one who has engaged in unhealthy activities for many years, must alter his behavior to treat his own particular situation, as per medical advice. Any deviation from one’s normal conduct is the start of illness.

Deios 4:22

In a place where no doctor is available, both the healthy and the sick should stick to the instructions in this chapter because they bring about good results.

Editor’s note: The Rambam lived in the 12th century and his medical advice incorporates the best knowledge of his day. Consult your rabbi with any questions involving practical application of these halachos.
