#220: Machshavah

Rav Shraga Feivel Mendlowitz (founder and administrator of Yeshivas Torah Vo’daath) writes in his sefer “Rishpei Eish” that Shabbat is designed to offer us both physical freedom from our daily toils and spiritual freedom from our negative desires. He explains that we should use Shabbat to do a “cheshbon hanefesh” (self-introspection) and consider the bigger picture: What are my spiritual goals in life? Am I doing everything I am supposed to, and how can I live an inspiring life filled with spiritual growth? On Shabbat, this can be done in a pleasant environment where we do not feel pressured by other factors.

May we all be blessed to use Shabbat to its full potential and achieve both physical as well as spiritual freedom.
