198:11 The pallbearers should not wear sandals that don't have heels since these can easily fall off. We are not concerned with this when it comes to regular shoes.

198:12 When the pallbearers carrying the deceased reach about 30 cubits from the grave (in the vicinity of 45 feet), they should stop every four cubits (six feet). In this way, they will stop seven times corresponding to a number of things, including the seven "vanities" in Koheles, the seven chambers of Gehinnom, and the seven judgments that apply to the deceased. They pause a little at each stop, which is a small atonement for the deceased. On a day on which Tachanun is not said, they do not need to stop because judgment is not as strict on such days.
