2,530. The Eight Conditions That Render an Animal a Treifa

We already discussed in Hilchos Maachalos Assuros that when the Torah says “treifa,” it refers to an animal that’s near death. It literally means “torn” but that’s because the Torah addresses the common situation, such as if a lion or other predator attacked and wounded the animal but it has not yet died.
Hilchos Shechita 5:2
Eight other conditions cause an animal to be considered a treifa; these were communicated to Moshe at Sinai. These are mauled, perforated, missing, removed, severed, torn, fallen and broken.
