2,426. Huge and Tiny Portions
Maachalos Assuros 14:7
If someone eats a large volume of a prohibited food, he isn’t liable to lashes or kareis for each olive-sized portion; rather, he is only liable once for everything that he ate. However, if a witness warned him regarding each olive-sized portion, then he is liable for every warning he received even though he ate all the food in one sitting.
Maachalos Assuros 14:8
Let’s say that someone eats a barleycorn-sized or a mustard seed-sized portion of any prohibited food, he pauses, and then he eats another mustard seed-sized portion, and he continues to do so until he has eaten an entire olive’s volume, either intentionally or unintentionally. If from start to finish he takes the time it would take to the volume of three eggs, it all combines and he is liable to kareis, lashes or an offering, the same as one who ate an olive-sized portion all at once. If he takes longer than this, what he ate doesn’t combine. If he eats an olive-sized portion in longer than it takes to eat a portion of bread with a dressing, he isn’t liable even if he doesn’t pause at all but keeps eating the volume of a mustard seed one after another.
