2,348. Does the Prohibition of Gid Hanashe Apply to Birds?
Maachalos Assuros 8:4
The prohibition against eating the sciatic nerve doesn’t apply to birds because they don’t have the right kind of hip socket. Rather, their thighs are long. If there’s a bird with a thigh like those of animals, with a hip socket, then its sciatic nerve is prohibited, though one would not be liable to lashes for eating it. Similarly, if an animal’s thigh is long like a bird’s, its sciatic nerve is prohibited but one isn’t liable for eating it
Maachalos Assuros 8:5
If someone eats the sciatic nerve of a non-kosher domesticated or wild animal, he’s not liable because the prohibition doesn’t apply to non-kosher animals, only those that are otherwise permitted. One is also not treated as if he ate from elsewhere on the body because the sciatic nerve isn’t meat, as has already been explained. However, if one eats the fat on the sciatic nerve, it’s the same as eating its meat.
