Siman - Yoma Daf 12

  • Machlokes whether Yerushalayim was apportioned to the Shevatim

The Gemara brings a machlokes Tannaim whether houses in Yerushalayim can become tamei from tumas tzaraas, based on the condition that tumas tzaraas occurs בארץ אחזתכם – the land of your inheritance. The Tanna Kamma rules that they cannot, because he holds ירושלים לא נתחלקה לשבטים – Yerushalayim was not apportioned among the shevatim, and is therefore not considered an inheritance. Rebbe Yehudah rules that houses in Yerushalayim can become tamei, as he holds that Yerushalayim was apportioned to the shevatim.

A Baraisa is brought to support Rebbe Yehudah, that states, מה היה בחלקו של יהודה – Which parts of the Beis Hamikdash were in the portion of Shevet Yehudah? הר הבית הלשכות והעזרות. And which parts were in the portion of Binyomin? The Ulam, the Heichal, the Beis Kodesh Kedoshim, and a strip of land which projected from the portion of Yehudah and entered into the portion of Binyomin ובה היה מזבח בנוי – and on it the mizbayach was built. And Binyomin HaTzadik was pained by it each day because of his longing to absorb it into his territory. Therefore, he was zocheh ונעשה אושפיזכן לגבורה – to become host to the presence of the Al-mighty as it says, ובין כתפיו שכן – and between his shoulders (referring to Binyomin), does He rest, (referring to Hashem). We see from here that Yerushalayim was apportioned to the shevatim. The Gemara brings a Baraisa that supports the Tanna Kamma.

  • How the substitute Kohen Gadol was invested into his new position

The Gemara asks that while it is obvious that if the Kohen Gadol becomes disqualified the morning of Yom Kippur, before the tamid shel shachar, the new Kohen Gadol is invested into his new position by bringing the tamid shel shachar, but what is he invested into office with if the Kohen Gadol becomes tamei after the tamid shel shachar?

- Rav Adda bar Ahavah said באבנט – With his pure linen belt, which was different than an ordinary Kohen’s belt which was made of shaatnez.

- Abaye said לובש שמונה ומהפך בצינורא – Before proceeding to the Yom Kippur service he dons the eight begadim of the Kohen Gadol and turns part of the tamid offering over on the fire of the mizbayach with a fork, to hasten its burning. This act is considered an avodah.

- Rav Pappa said עבודתו מחנכתו – his performance of the Yom Kippur service, even without any other act, invests him with his office, since only a Kohen Gadol can do the avodah on Yom Kippur.

  • Machlokes regarding the אבנט of the Kohen Hedyot

When Ravin arrived from Eretz Yisroel he said that everybody agrees that the אבנט of the Kohen Gadol on Yom Kippur was made of pure linen, and the rest of the year his אבנט was made of kilayim. They disagree regarding the אבנט of an ordinary Kohen, both on the other days of the year and on Yom Kippur. For Rebbe says it was made of kilayim, while Rebbe Elazar b’Rebbe Shimon says it was made of pure linen. Therefore, according to Rebbe, the four begadim that the ordinary Kohen wore, were essentially the same as those worn by the Kohen Gadol throughout the year, besides his four additional begadim.
