2,083. A Woman Who Gives Birth as a Zavah

Hilchos Issurei Biah 7:5

The laws of a woman who gives birth as a zavah are as follows: she must observe seven clean days, after which she immerses in a mikvah and is permitted to her husband. Only after this do the laws of pure blood apply. She must bring a zavah’s offering as well as the offering of one who has given birth. Therefore, if she gave birth to a boy, even if she stops bleeding on the day she delivers, she must count seven clean days and immerse; if she gave birth to a girl and counts seven clean days which end with or after the 14 days she’s impure, then she can immerse and is permitted to her husband. If her counting days end within those 14 days, she is prohibited to her husband until the fifteenth night.

Hilchos Issurei Biah 7:6

Pursuant to the previous halacha, if the woman saw blood for three days and then counted seven clean days, that’s ten days and she remains prohibited to her husband until the fifteenth night; she is like a niddah for all 14 days. We don’t require a woman who gives birth as a zavah to count seven clean days after the seven days following the birth of a boy or the 14 days following the birth of a girl because the days after giving birth and the niddah days in which blood is not seen count as part of the seven clean days, as will be discussed in halacha 7:11.
