2,000. Imposing the Oath
Hilchos Sotah 3:6
The suspected woman’s male and female servants were not permitted to attend the sotah ceremony because if she saw them, it would strengthen her resolve to maintain her innocence.
Hilchos Sotah 3:7
Next, the kohein would impose an oath on her in a language that she understands. He tells her in her native tongue that this test is being carried out because she violated the warning that her husband gave her by entering into seclusion with the object of his suspicion. He then reads her Numbers 5:19-23 in a language she understands, i.e., “If a man hasn’t been intimate with you and you haven’t committed adultery, rendering you prohibited to your husband, then you won’t be harmed by this bitter water of curse. But if you have committed adultery and prohibited yourself because a man other than your husband has been intimate with you... then God will make of you a curse and an oath among your people when He causes your thigh* to fall away and your belly to swell. This curse water will enter your innards, making your belly swell and your thigh to fall away.” The woman then responds, “Amen, Amen,” in a language that she understands. The kohein tells the woman that her belly will be affected first, followed by her thigh. This is to clarify the order of events so that people will know that the water worked properly.
