1,983. The Testimony of One Witness
Hilchos Sotah 1:8
If a man gave a warning to his wife in front of two witnesses and he subsequently saw her enter into seclusion with the man about whom she was warned, remaining there long enough to engage in relations, she becomes prohibited to him. He must divorce her and pay her the value of her kesubah. Similarly, if he hears rumors after his wife has been warned saying that she was secluded with that man, and these rumors spread to the extent that the women who weave by the moonlight gossip that she committed adultery with the man about whom she was warned, then her husband is not permitted to remain married to her. Rather, he must instead divorce her and pay her the value of her kesubah.
Hilchos Sotah 1:9
Let’s say that, after a warning was made, one witness arrives and testifies that the woman entered into seclusion with the man about whom she was warned, remaining there long enough for relations. If the woman’s husband considers this witness trustworthy and relies on his word, then he must divorce his wife and pay her the value of her kesubah. If he doesn’t rely on this witness, then his wife remains permitted to him.
