1,885. Sisters-in-Law Who Report Their Husbands' Deaths

Yibum v’Chalitzah 3:6

Just as the statements of five women are not acceptable when it comes to establishing the death of a woman’s husband, the statements of these five women are not accepted when it comes to establishing the death of a yavam. The laws of the testimony regarding a yavam’s death are identical with those regarding the death of a woman’s husband.

Yibum v’Chalitzah 3:7

Let’s say that two women (married to brothers) return from abroad, each one claiming that her own husband died. Neither is permitted to remarry because of her obligation to perform yibum with the other woman’s husband. This is because the testimony of a sister-in-law (one of the five women referred to in the previous halacha) is not admissible as far as establishing the death of one’s yavam, as we have said.
