1,840. Claiming That a Get was Forged

Let’s say that an agent assigned by a woman to accept her get receives it from the husband and sends it to her in front of two witnesses. The woman is divorced even though she doesn’t know whether it was sent by her husband, her agent or the husband’s agent.

Hilchos Geirushin 12:14

If the husband objects that he didn’t write the get or that it’s invalid, then the signatures must be validated. This works because there are witnesses that the get was in possession of the woman’s agent, which is the same as being in her possession. She may not have known that it was in her agent’s possession but the witnesses knew. If the signatures can’t be validated, then divorce is not effected.
