Siman - Shabbos Daf 62
- Women wearing tefillin
Rav Yosef explained that the reason Ulla forbids women to wear men’s accessories in reshus harabim on Shabbos, and men to wear women’s accessories, is that Ulla holds נשים עם בפני עצמן הן – women are viewed as a nation unto themselves.
Abaye challenged this reasoning from a Baraisa that permits a woman who finds tefillin in the field or marketplace on Shabbos to wear one pair at a time and bring them in. Since women are exempt from the mitzvah of tefillin because it is a time-bound positive mitzvah, why is she permitted to put them on? They should be considered a burden to her, and she should be liable to bring a chatas? It must be, therefore, that women are permitted to wear men’s accessories in reshus harabim.
The Gemara answers that the Baraisa is going according to R’ Meir who holds that the mitzvah of tefillin is also at night, and is also an obligation on Shabbos, which means it is not a time-bound mitzvah and women are therefore obligated to wear them.
- Forbidden practices after the churban of the Beis Hamikdash
In a discussion regarding what practices were forbidden since the destruction of the Beis Hamikdash, Abaye clarifies that the Rabbonim decreed כל מידי דאית ביה תענוג ואית ביה שמחה – anything that involves pleasure (sensual gratification) and also involves joy. Anything that does not inspire both emotions was not prohibited.
This explains why indulging in balsam oil, which involves pleasure but not joy, was not prohibited.
- Three causes of poverty
Rebbe Abahu said, (some say that a Tanna taught in a Baraisa), that the three things that bring a person to poverty are urinating before one’s bed[w1] , treating the mitzvah of netilas yadaim lightly, and being cursed by one’s wife in one’s presence.
Regarding handwashing, Rav Chisda said he washed his hands with full handfuls of water and was given full handfuls of prosperity.
Rava clarifies that the case of a wife cursing, is where she is cursing her husband due to the husband having enough money to buy her adornments but does not.
