1,745. When a Get is Thrown But Misses

Hilchos Geirushin 5:11

Let’s say that the woman is on her roof and her husband throws her the get but it lands on someone else’s roof. If she can reach out and take it, divorce is effected. Even though they are in separate domains, people don’t object to their property being used in this manner.

Hilchos Geirushin 5:12

Let’s say that the woman holds her arm at an angle and her husband throws her a get but it lands on the ground. If it lands within four cubits of where she’s standing (about six feet), then divorce is effected. If it falls into the sea or a fire, then divorce is not effected if she’s standing next to that water or fire because the get would invariably be destroyed in its descent.
