1,739. Personal Messages in a Get

Hilchos Geirushin 4:24

Let’s say that the scribe left part of a column blank and continued the text of the get at the top of the next column. If the witnesses sign below the text in the second column, the get is valid so long as it’s clear that the scroll wasn’t cut off and the scribe intended to finish the get in that second column. If this is not obvious, then the divorce is in doubt even if the get was delivered in front of witnesses. This is out of concern that there might have been two gets and the parts below the get in the first column and above the get in the second column got cut off.

Hilchos Geirushin 4:25

Let’s say that a scribe finished writing a get and wrote after it a message like “Give my regards to person X” or “Hello to you, my friend Person Y” and the witnesses signed under this message. In such a case, the divorce is in doubt even if the woman is already in possession of the get. This is out of concern that the witnesses might only have signed the message. However, if the scribe wrote “and give my regards…” or “and hello to you…,” then the get is valid because it’s obvious that the message goes with the get and the witnesses signed both of them. If the get was delivered in front of witnesses, it is valid in either case.
