1,735. A Get That Has Become Illegible

Hilchos Geirushin 4:16

If a get fades, rots or becomes riddled with holes, it remains valid. If it gets rubbed out or the letters get blurred but their shapes remain, then if it can still be read, it remains valid but if not, then it is invalid.

Hilchos Geirushin 4:17

The above halacha applies when a woman is in possession of a get that has been signed by witnesses but there are no witnesses that it was delivered. However, if there are witnesses who testify that the get was delivered in front of them and that it was valid at the time, then divorce is effected. This is so even if the main parts of the get were on the part that got erased or were inserted between the lines, or if the get was torn horizontally and vertically when it was delivered to the woman in front of the witnesses.
