1,699. Verbalizing the Delivery of the Get

Hilchos Geirushin 1:11

When a man gives a get, he must tell his wife, “Behold, your get,” “this is your get” or something similar. If he puts the get in her hand without saying anything, it is ineffective. This is the case when the couple was not discussing divorce; if they were discussing divorce and he put the get in her hand without saying anything, divorce is effected.

Hilchos Geirushin 1:12

Let’s say that the get is lying on the ground and the man tells his wife, “Pick up your get,” or if it was tied to his hand or his leg and she took it from him. Even if he says, “Behold your get” after she takes possession of it, it is invalid. This is because the Torah says, “put it in her hand,” specifying that she may not take it on her own; it is invalid since neither her husband nor his agent delivered it to her. However, if he bends towards her or reaches his hand until she takes the get from him and says, “Behold your get,” then the get is valid.
