61. Placement of the Mezuzah
11:2 A mezuzah must also be placed on appropriate entrances to courtyards, alleyways, cities and more since the Torah says “and on your gates” (Deuteronomy 6:9, 11:20).
11:3 The mezuzah must be placed on the right side of a doorway, “right side” being based upon the direction a person faces when entering the room. A mezuzah affixed on the wrong side is invalid; it must be removed and replaced in the proper location. When one places the mezuzah in its proper spot, he would recite the blessing likboa mezuzah (that God commanded us to attach the mezuzah) even though he may have already recited it when the mezuzah was improperly placed. Unlike tefillin, whose placement is determined by whether a person is right- or left-handed, a mezuzah’s placement is unaffected by whether the occupant is right- or left-handed.
