175. Holy Texts
28:4 One may not sit on a bench with a holy book unless it is placed on something a handbreadth high (about 3.5 inches). One may certainly not place holy books on the ground. If one is holding a sefer in his lap, he may not lean on it. If need be, one may sit on a box containing seforim but not if there is a sefer Torah in it. A Chumash may be placed on top of Books of the Neviim (Prophets) and Kesuvim (Writings). Books of Neviim and Kesuvim may be placed on one another but not on top of a Chumash.
28:5 A Torah scroll that has become worn out should be put away. (It should be placed in a clay container and buried with a Torah scholar – OC 154:5.) This is also true of other holy books and religious articles. It is forbidden to burn holy books and religious articles.
