249. What Utensils Require Immersion

37:8 Immersion is only required for utensils that are used for food at a stage of preparation such that it can be eaten immediately after, without any additional preparation. Therefore, the iron tools used to prepare matzah and to cut dough, the needle used to sew stuffed foods, and similar items, need not be immersed. Nevertheless, a knife used to slaughter or skin animals must be immersed because they can also be used for cooked foods. This is also true of the trays on which matzos are placed. Such things should be immersed without reciting the blessing. A tripod that holds a pot need not be immersed since it doesn't come into contact with food. A metal spit used to roast meat should be immersed with a blessing. There is a difference of opinion what should be done regarding bottles and other vessels that hold liquids to pour into cups, from which we then drink. There is therefore good reason to immerse such vessels without a blessing. 37:9 A pepper mill must be immersed because of its metal parts but its wooden receptacle need not be immersed. Coffee grinders should be immersed without a blessing.
