1,577. If the Woman Demands a Divorce

If a woman demands that her husband divorce her after ten years because she has not given birth, saying that it is because he doesn’t demonstrate virility, a divorce is granted. Even though she is not obligated in the mitzvah of procreation, she needs sons for her old age, so he is compelled to divorce her. In this case, he must only pay her the baseline amount of the kesubah because the intention of the additional amount was never that she choose to leave and collect that extra sum.

If a husband takes a long journey during these ten years, or if either of them was sick or in prison, that time is not counted towards the ten years.
