נפש אשר תגע בו וטמאה עד הערב ולא יאכל מן הקדשים כי אם רחץ בשרו במים. ובא השמש וטהר ואחר יאכל מן הקדשים כי לחמו הוא" - ויקרא כב:ו-ז"

When the sun sets (a person passes away) only then can a person eat from the holy (i.e. true reward). Only "after the sun sets" are we fully cleansed of sin. However, a person only achieves purification of ביאת שמש if he first immerses in the mikvah - puts in the effort to purify him/herself - before that.
