719. Animals are Muktzeh
98:17 Things that are doubtfully trapped or doubtfully prepared are forbidden. In a case of great need, one may be lenient on the second day of yom tov, but not on Rosh Hashana (since both days of Rosh Hashana are considered like one long day. One may likewise not be lenient when the second day of yom tov leads directly into Shabbos – Mishnah Brurah 497:10).
98:18 All living creatures are muktzeh; they may not be fed or watered up close, only from a small distance away. (This is to avoid the possibility of taking the animal for food, a concern that does not apply with non-kosher animals – MB 497:6.)
