752. Dairy on Shavuos

103:6 On the second day of Pesach, one should have something at the meal to commemorate Esther's banquet, which was held on that day; that was the day on which Haman was hanged.

103:7 There is a custom to eat dairy foods on the first day of Shavuos. There are various reasons for this; one of these is an allusion in Numbers 28:26, "Mincha Chadasha Lashem B'shavuoseichem" ("A new meal offering to Hashem on your holiday of Shavuos"). In the original Hebrew, the first letters of these words spell "from milk." One should also eat foods made from honey because the Torah is compared to them, as per Shir HaShirim 4:11, "honey and milk are under your tongue." Because we eat dairy products, but we must also eat meat because it's a mitzvah to do so on every yom tov, we must be careful not to violate the prohibition of eating meat and milk together.
