Finding Yosef

What emerges from the text about Yosef is a complex personality that changes over time. The Torah portrays him as charismatic, a person who always rises to the top no matter in what situation he finds himself (in his father's house, in Potiphar's house, in prison, in Pharaoh's court) but at the same time "socially clueless" - bringing negative reports about his brothers to his father, telling his brothers about his dreams even knowing that they already dislike him.

Everything that happens in Yosef's life he attributes to God, yet God is silent throughout the story of Yosef! God spoke to his forefathers but not to him. Yosef, on the other hand, brings G-d into the picture without having experienced any prior Divine Revelation!

The story of Yosef, like the story of Purim, is a story of choosing to attribute seemingly natural events to Divine Providence.
