1,298. The Constellations
Hilchos Kiddush HaChodesh 11:8
If a person calculated a star’s position in the sphere at 70 degrees, 30 minutes and 40 seconds, he would know that this star is in the constellation of Gemini, in the middle of its 11th degree. This is because Aries has 30 degrees, then Taurus has 30 degrees. Therefore, the remaining ten and a half degrees, plus 40 seconds of the next degree, are in Gemini.
Hilchos Kiddush HaChodesh 11:9
Similarly, if one were to calculate a star’s position in the sphere at 320 degrees, he would know that it is located in the 20th degree of Aquarius. The same is true of all such calculations. The order of the constellations is: Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius and Pisces.
