Tavi, the servant of Rabban Gamliel is described in the Gemara as כשר and תלמיד חכם. The Midrash even says he was greater than the Tannaim. The Chida brings that Tavi was a gilgul of Cham. Why did Rabban Gamliel punch out his eye?
