1,201. Who is Obligated in the Mitzvah of Lulav?
Hilchos Shofar, Succah v’Lulav 7:18
Nowadays, when everyone follows a fixed calendar, things remain as they were and the lulav is not taken on Shabbos, neither in the distant inhabitations nor in Israel, not even on the first day of the Succos. This is so even though everyone knows the what day of the month it is without any doubts. As previous noted, the reason for the prohibition against taking the lulav on Shabbos is out of concern that one may come to carry it four cubits (about 6’) in the public domain.
Hilchos Shofar, Succah v’Lulav 7:19
Whoever is obligated in the mitzvos of shofar and succah is also obligated in the mitzvah of lulav. Whoever is not obligated in the mitzvos of shofar and succah is not obligated in the mitzvah of lulav. A child who knows how to handle the lulav is rabbinically obligated in the mitzvah in order to train him in the performance of mitzvos.
