1,192. Defining the Lulav
Hilchos Shofar, Succah v’Lulav 6:16
It is prohibited for all eight days of the holiday to take food and drinks that were hung as succah decorations. If when one hung them up he stipulated that he would not refrain from using them during the entire twilight period, then he may use them whenever he likes. This is because he did not set these items aside, the sanctity of the succah did not include them, and they are not considered part of the succah.
Hilchos Shofar, Succah v’Lulav 7:1
When the Torah speaks of palm fronds, it refers to the branches of a date palm as they sprout, before the leaves separate and spread in different directions. The leaves should look like a scepter. This is what we call a lulav.
