Koheles 3:5
עֵת לְהַשְׁלִיךְ אֲבָנִים וְעֵת כְּנוֹס אֲבָנִים עֵת לַחֲבוֹק וְעֵת לִרְחֹק מֵחַבֵּק
(There is) a time to scatter stones and a time to gather stones; a time to embrace and a time to refrain from embracing.
Rashi quotes the Midrash from Koheles Rabbah on this verse. When is the time to scatter stones? This refers to when the Jews were scattered following the destruction of the Temple as per Eicha 4:1, “The holy stones are scattered…” The time to gather is when the Jews are retrieved from exile as per Zechariah 9:16, “G-d will save them on that day like the flocks of His people; they will be like the stones of a crown…” The time to embrace is as per Jeremiah 13:11, “I have caused the whole house of Israel and the whole house of Judah to cling to Me…” The time to refrain from embracing is seen in Isaiah 6:12, “G-d has removed men far away…”
