SHABBAT PREPARATION CHECKLIST

Preparing For Shabbat

Here are some suggestions (these are NOT halachot!) of what to prepare in advance of Shabbat. Add or delete to suit your needs!

Candle Lighting

____ Check candle lighting time

____ Set the candles in their holders (and have matches nearby)

Set the Table

____ Set the table, including the challa and its cover and the wine cup.

Kitchen Preparation

____ Sharpen knives

____ Tear paper towels

____ Refrigerator: Turn off or unscrew lights; disconnect any LEDs or fans

____ Set up blech

____ Set up hot water urn

____ Turn off stove, oven

Food Preparation

____ Thaw frozen meat, fish, and other food that might take hours to defrost before being cooked

____ Cook whatever can be cooked ahead of time on Thursday night, Friday morning, or earlier in the week

____ Squeeze lemons; do any other boreir-type preparations

____ Chill wine

____ Open bottles and cans that will be needed on Shabbat

____ Prepare tea essence

Cleaning

____ Make beds

____ Sweep or vacuum

____ Dump garbage

Clothing

____ Do laundry

____ Empty pockets of muktza (or if there is no eruv, of everything!)

____ For men: set out Shabbat talit

Muktza

____ Check that nothing you will need is beneath a muktza item

Personal Care

____ Cut hair and nails, if needed

____ For men, shave or trim beard and mustache, if needed

____ Tear dental floss

____ Tear toilet paper or put out tissues in bathrooms

____ Open any new boxes of tissues

Electronics

____ Set heat or air conditioning

____ Turn on or off lights, or set timers for them

____ If desired, turn off or disconnect:

Alarms

____ Cellphones and phones

____ Computers

____ Microwave detectors

____ Other electronics

Eruv

____ Check that the eruv (if any) is good
