Micah 5:4

This will be peace: if Assyria should come into our land and tread in our palaces, then we will raise seven shepherds and eight princes among men against them.

Who are these seven shepherds and eight princes? The Talmud in Succah (52b) tells us that the shepherds are Adam, Seth, Methuselah, Avraham, Yaakov, Moshe and David. The princes are Jesse, Shaul, Shmuel, Chizkiyahu, Amos, Zephaniah, Eliyahu and Moshiach. Why is Yitzchak not counted among the shepherds? Rashi there refers us to the Midrash – also cited in Talmud Shabbos 89b – that Yitzchak’s job at that time will be to save the souls of his descendants from punishment.
