1,082. Home Repairs on Chol HaMoed
Shvisas Yom Tov 8:6
If a garden wall falls on chol hamoed, one may build it in an amateur fashion, such as by erecting a partition out of reeds, bullrushes, etc. Similarly, if one installs a guardrail on his roof on chol hamoed, he must do so in an amateur fashion. On the other hand, if a courtyard wall falls, it may be rebuilt in the regular manner. If a wall is deteriorating, it should be torn down because of the danger it poses and then rebuilt it in the regular manner.
Shvisas Yom Tov 8:7
On chol hamoed, one may build a bench to sit or sleep on. If things like a hinge, a drainpipe, a lintel, a lock or a key get broken, they may be repaired on chol hamoed in the usual manner regardless of whether they are made of iron or wood. The reason this is permitted is because neglecting them can lead to one incurring a great loss; if one leaves the entrance to his home open and the doors broken, he can lose everything in the house. As discussed in halacha 7:3, when faced with a loss, tasks may be performed in the usual manner.
