1,038. Assembling Utensils

Shvisas Yom Tov 4:13

Utensils that are made of parts, like candelabras, chairs or tables that are made up of pieces, may be assembled on yom tov so long as one does not connect the pieces firmly. This is permitted because the labor of building does not apply to utensils. One is permitted to pile up stones for use as a latrine; since this is only a temporary structure, the Sages permitted it out of respect for human dignity.

Shvisas Yom Tov 4:14

When making a fire on yom tov, the one who sets up the wood should not stack the logs in an orderly manner as this resembles the labor of building. This is prohibited even though it’s only a temporary structure. Rather, one must either unload the logs chaotically or stack them in a disorderly fashion: one puts a log on top, another below it, another below that, etc. until it reaches the ground.
