1,035. Bellows, Charcoal and Wicks
Shvisas Yom Tov 4:7
One may not blow on a fire using bellows on yom tov because this is the manner of professionals; we may do so using a tube. Making charcoal is prohibited on yom tov. Similarly, we may not braid wicks, singe them or cut them using a utensil. One is permitted to squeeze a wick manually, soak it in oil, and position its ends in two lamps and light it in the middle, causing it to divide between the two lamps.
Shvisas Yom Tov 4:8
On yom tov, it is prohibited to break an earthenware shard or to cut a piece of papyrus to roast over. One may not break a reed for use as a spit to roast on. If a spit gets bent, we are not permitted to repair it, not even by hand. If two utensils have been attached since the time they were first made, such as two lamps or two cups, we are not allowed to separate them because doing so renders a utensil fit for use.
