1,034. Incense on Yom Tov
Shvisas Yom Tov 4:5
It is permitted to carry a burning candle on yom tov; the Sages did not prohibit this from a fear that doing so might cause the candle to blow out. One is not permitted to place a candle on something like a tree on yom tov because we may not make use of growing things that are still attached to the earth on yom tov.
Shvisas Yom Tov 4:6
We may not burn incense on yom tov because doing so entails extinguishing. This applies when one wants to smell it and certainly when one desires to impart its scent into his home or clothes. It is permitted to smoke produce to make it suitable for eating just as one may roast meat over a fire. One may sweeten mustard with heated metal but not with charred wood because producing the wood entail extinguishing. We may not dowse a fire to keep food or the house from become smoky.
