1,033. Extinguishing a Fire

Shvisas Yom Tov 4:3

It is prohibited to raise the opening of a lamp so that the flame will go out; similarly, one may not remove oil from the lamp or cut off the top of the wick using a utensil. It is permitted to knock off the top of the wick manually. If a bundle of wood catches fire, it is permitted to remove a piece of wood that has not caught fire; this is not comparable to removing oil from a lamp.

Shvisas Yom Tov 4:4

One may not extinguish a fire on yom tov to prevent a financial loss, the same as on Shabbos. Rather, one must abandon the doomed property. One may not extinguish a candle in order to engage in marital relations. Rather, one must cover the candle with a utensil, block it with a partition or move it to a different room. If none of these options is possible, it is forbidden to snuff the candle and one may not engage in marital relations until it goes out.
