1,020. Firewood on Yom Tov
Shvisas Yom Tov 2:12
On yom tov, we may not chop wood that was placed in a pile of beams because it is muktzeh. Similarly, one may not chop up a beam that broke on yom tov because of nolad (something that comes into existence over yom tov). Continuing along these lines, one may not use utensils that broke on yom tov as fuel for kindling because of nolad. One may, however, make fuel for kindling out of utensils that are still intact or that were broken before yom tov began because these are prepared for whatever purposes necessary from before yom tov. Similarly, if nuts were eaten before yom tov began, their shells may be used as fuel for kindling on yom tov but if they were eaten on yom tov, their shells may not be used. Some editions of the Talmud say that if the nuts were eaten before nightfall, we may not use their shells as fuel because they are muktzeh but if they were eaten on yom tov, they may be used as fuel because they were designated for use thanks to their edible portions.
Shvisas Yom Tov 2:13
A fresh-cut thorn branch is muktzeh because it is not fit to be used as fuel for kindling. Since it is muktzeh, it may not be used as a spit to roast meat. The same principle applies in all comparable scenarios.
