1,007. Making Extra Food on Yom Tov

Shvisas Yom Tov 1:10

A woman may fill a pot with meat even if she only needs one piece. A baker may boil a cauldron of water even if he only needs one pitcher full. A woman may bake an oven full of bread even if she only needs one loaf, because bread bakes better when the oven is full. One may likewise salt several pieces of meat even if he only needs one piece. The same is true in all comparable scenarios.

Shvisas Yom Tov 1:11

If a person cooks or bakes on yom tov intending to eat the food that day, or if one invited guests who didn’t come so that there is food left, it may be eaten the next day regardless of whether it is a weekday or Shabbos. This is only so provided one has not contrived a pretext to make extra food. If one has contrived a pretext, he is not allowed to eat the food, not even on a Shabbos that immediately follows yom tov. This is because we are even stricter with one who contrives a pretext than we are with one who simply violates the law.
